38/50

38/50 is a performance project by Randall Sinner that intervenes with flags in states with the death penalty, transforming them into ropes to question institutional violence, state power, and human rights.

The 38/50 Project

Is a performative and conceptual artistic investigation developed by Randall Sinner over the course of approximately a decade in the United States, focusing on the 38 states that applied the death penalty during that period. In each of these territories, the artist carried out an action consisting of standing in front of official buildings, such as state capitol buildings, to fray the corresponding flag, subsequently transforming its threads into ropes that were embroidered to reconstruct a new version of the symbol. This gesture functions as a metaphor for the decomposition and reconfiguration of state power, revealing the violence inscribed within its structures. The final work consists of extensive documentation that includes photographic records, media coverage, prints of the interventions, as well as the material remains of the flags and the resulting ropes. Beyond its aesthetic dimension, 38/50 proposes a space for critical reflection on the death penalty, human rights, and the legitimacy of institutional violence, articulating a narrative that connects territory, law, and memory within a single field of analysis.
